The Great Debate: iPhone 6 Plus or iPad Mini

Posted by Cameron Parker on

Which One Should You Get?

Years ago, the late Steve Jobs proclaimed iPhone users did not want bigger screens. But times have changed. Now, Apple has their biggest iPhone yet: the Apple iPhone 6 Plus.

Armed with a 5.5 inch screen display, it's become Apple's unexpected pride and glory. Almost at a league of its own, it's no wonder that its biggest competitor is an Apple product as well: the iPad 3 Mini!

Not sure which one to get? We've compiled a rundown on how these two awesome gadgets measure up against each other.

DESIGN and BUILD

Let's be clear, both look great in their own way. The iPhone 6 Plus comes with rounded corners giving it a sleek design. It's also lighter and you can fit into a jean pocket or small pouch easily. On the other hand, the iPad 3 Mini looks the same as the iPad 2. It still has squarish corners and you might need a bigger bag to carry it around.

THE KING: iPhone 6 Plus because it feels more modern and it's easier to carry.

DISPLAY

Even if it's smaller, the iPhone 6 Plus delivers with its 5.5 inch screen, 1920x1080 resolution with 401 ppi Retina HD display. Watching a movie or scrolling through your Pinterest, Instagram or Flickr checking out the images, gives you sharp, clear and vibrant colours like no other.

Meanwhile, the iPad 3 Mini carries a 7.9 inch screen, with 2048x1536 resolution and 326ppi, IPS Retina display. It's equally amazing and delivers great colours and contrast. The brightness levels are also magnificent.

Apple is known to take pride in their displays and both these devices offer the best.

THE KING: It's a TIE! But if you love the bigger screen or simply need it for productivity, the iPad Mini is perfect.

PERFORMANCE UNDER THE HOOD

This is one territory the iPhone 6 Plus wins hands down. Under the hood, the 6 Plus carries a faster A8 64-bit processor so it's definitely zippy in terms of CPU action as well as graphics performance.

Meanwhile, the iPad 3 Mini only carries an A7 processor which is still pretty fast but simply not as great as that of the 6 Plus.

THE KING: iPhone 6 PLUS, no doubt about it.

CAMERA

This might be a bit unfair because hands down the 6 Plus carries a better camera than the iPad 3 Mini. The Mini carries a 5 MP rear camera and a 1.2 MP front camera. Compared to the previous iPad versions, this is slightly better, but nowhere near as good as that of the 6 Plus.

The 6 Plus offers an 8 MP rear camera with OIS and a 1.2 MP front camera. The quality is striking even in low light and it's a level up from the previous iPhone cameras as well.

THE KING: iPhone 6 PLUS

STORAGE CAPACITY

Evenly matched on this front, both devices carry 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. There's no option to upgrade or insert an external one so there's no argument here.

THE KING: TIE!

BATTERY:

We all want better battery life, don't we? The iPhone 6 Plus can reach up to 12 hours with looping video played endlessly while the iPad 3 Mini can reach up to 10 hours before conking out.

THE KING: iPhone 6 PLUS

PRICE (*based on US Apple Store)

Apple iPhone 6 Plus - Starts at $299

Apple iPad Mini 3 - Starts at $399

Sure there's a $100 price gap between the two. But don't be too quick to jump to conclusions and check out what that difference in price brings you.

THE KING: iPhone 6 PLUS (only because it has a cheaper starting price)

Who's the Ultimate King?

Despite being evenly matched in display, operating system as well as storage capacity, it's clear that the iPhone 6 PLUS offers more compared to the Mini.

However, the 6 Plus is definitely crafted for the phablet crowd. It won't win any favours if you want a tablet you can work from because the screen size will be too small for editing documents or replying to several emails efficiently.

Of course, if money is no problem then having both the 6 Plus and iPad 3 Mini is just fine too.
